In the famous work The Problem of Evil Swinburne pays attention to different kinds of goods that are in this world. He states that these goods are influential and inherent. Inherent good is something that is good by itself. Such goods as love, joy or happiness may be regarded as inherent, as they depend only on the inner state of the person. It does not matter what kind of person is, he deserves to feel and do these inherent goods. As for the influential or instrumental good, it is something that may not be good by itself. It can help to do good and achieve pleasure.
There are a lot of examples of influential goods in our world. Modern medicine can be given as an excellent example. Nowadays humanity faced the existence of the great amount of different diseases, which cause a lot of deaths. The achievements of modern medicine not only saved great number of lives but also made ill people and their relatives happy. The existence of the Black Plague in Europe in the medieval period became the reason of death and pain of millions of people. It also was the result of bad conditions that people should live in. As a result the third of the population was dead, and it can not be approved by the sympathy of those who left alive and watched the deaths of their close people. The discovery of many chemists and things that can save people s lives can be regarded as a real good.
One more instrumental good is education. It helps people get to know something new and interesting for them, making them happy. For example literacy helped people transfer all their thoughts and good emotions on paper for the others to share their feelings. In general, it must be said that good is the individual thing and everyone can decide himself what he finds good.
